Oakwood Lakes State Park is a year-round recreation area in eastern South Dakota’s Brookings County centered on Johnson Lake and Lake Tetonkaha. It offers camping, swimming, fishing, hiking, boating, canoe and kayak rentals, horse camp sites, and winter cross-country skiing. The park also holds an important place in South Dakota history: in 1945, the legislature established Oakwood Lakes as one of the three parks created with the formation of the statewide park system, alongside Hartford Beach State Park and Lake Herman State Park. Until then, Custer State Park, opened in 1919, had been the only park under state management.
