The founding of Skullyville dates back to 1832, when the removal of the Choctaws was in full progress. Its old cemetery contains hundreds of Indian people in unmarked graves, and the remaining engraved stones date to the early eighteen thirties. The cemetery is a peaceful resting place of many ancestors, and on May 2, 1998, Choctaw Chief Gregory E. Pyle designated Skullyville Cemetery as the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma's National Cemetery. Skullyville was also associated with the original three districts, the national capital, the district capital, and the county court of the Choctaw Nation, which consists of 12 districts whose members elect the chief and Tribal Council.
