Karl Oskar and Kristina are fictitious characters in Vilhelm Moberg’s trilogy The Emigrants, Unto a Good Land, and The Last Letter Home, and they symbolize the migration of Swedish peasants to America, including those who settled in the Chisago Lakes Area about the middle of the nineteenth century. The accompanying poem evokes the hard, stony land they left behind, where children and young people lived with poverty and dreamed of America, Minnesota Territory, and Ki-Chi-Saga. After one hundred years, the memory of that departure from the “Kingdom of Stone” was recovered, and one of its sons followed those traces and wrote the Books of the Emigrants. The stone itself, broken loose and uprooted like the pioneers, stands as a remembrance of people who exchanged stone for rich harvests while preserving the memory of the warm rock beneath their childhood bare feet.
