In Coloma, this California state historic park preserves the site where James W. Marshall discovered gold at Sutter’s Mill in 1848, setting off the California Gold Rush and transforming the region. Encompassing much of historic Coloma, it includes the old Coloma Road, which Marshall used to bring news to Captain John A. Sutter and which thousands of miners later traveled. The park also contains several California Historical Landmarks, including the discovery site and Marshall’s grave monument. Established in 1942, it preserves the landscape, roads, and collections that connect the gold discovery to the rapid reshaping of California.
