Carquinez Strait Light was established near Vallejo to improve navigation between San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento River after Mare Island Light proved less effective in that location. First exhibited on January 15, 1910, it stood at the end of a 1.5-mile pier and was attached to a large three-story residence. The station also served as a testing site for fog-signal technology. In the 1950s, the light was deactivated and operations shifted to automated equipment and new quarters on the bluff. The original building was removed, converted into a resort, and later moved to Glen Cove Marina, where the former keeper’s dwelling survives in repurposed form.
