A lined section of the Cajon Canal, circa 1923, helped bring water from the Santa Ana River to Rancho Santa Ana and several northern Orange County communities during the county's early development. Construction of the original unlined earthen canal began in 1875 and was completed by 1878 under joint ownership of the Cajon Irrigation Company and Anaheim Water Company, predecessors of the Anaheim Union Water Company. Generations of dedicated zanjeros managed the canal's operation by regulating the flow and distribution of water through it. Although the Cajon Canal was abandoned in the 1960's, the last known intact section can still be viewed along historic Pomegranate Road approximately 1/4 mile northwest of this site.
