Merkle Natural Resources Management Area in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, is a protected wildlife refuge operated by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Spanning 1,670 acres, it is best known as a wintering and breeding area for Canada geese. The refuge was founded by Edgar A. Merkle, a printer whose company produced major magazines such as Sports Illustrated and Life. Today the area balances wildlife management with public access through the Frank Oslislo Visitors Center, which features exhibits on Canada geese and natural history, as well as live reptiles and amphibians, plus a driving tour and several trails for exploring the refuge.
