Elias Swartz was killed in Scranton by the explosion of the locomotive Virginia on October 24, 1859, at the age of 47. The inscription adds a biblical warning to be ready for the coming of the Son of Man at an unexpected hour, and it mourns him as a husband and father whose death brought pain to his family. Masonic and Odd Fellows emblems also appear with his memorial.
