In 1848, James Marshall saw small gold nuggets gleaming in the tailrace of the sawmill, and that discovery set off the gold rush as people came from all over the world in search of gold. The place where he found the gold later remained a destination for visitors, and it is also the site of the sawmill and a place to learn about the many stories of those who sought their fortunes in California.
