Hopeton Earthworks
History
2
Hopeton Earthworks is an Ohio Hopewell site on the eastern bank of the Scioto River north of Chillicothe, within Hopewell Culture National Historical Park. It preserves major geometric earthwork enclosures and mounds, including a large rectangle joined by a circle in an unusual arrangement, with smaller circles nearby and multiple gateways. Mid-19th-century surveyors and visitors recorded massive earthen walls, broad embankments without accompanying ditches, parallel walls toward the river terrace, and traces of excavation inside. Once interpreted as a fortification, Hopeton is now understood as part of the Hopewell ceremonial landscape and a major surviving expression of Hopewell culture in southern Ohio.
