An exact replica of the headstock erected here in 1836 stands above the 625-foot Middle Shaft mine. Weighing 17 tons, it is built with mortise and tenon joints fastened by wooden dowels to remain true to the original wood structure. Ropes and pulleys connected to a Cornish steam engine mechanized the raising and lowering of men, mules, materials, and coal. The 11-foot by 11-foot mine shaft was fully timbered and divided by timbers into four narrower shafts, each serving its own purpose: two lifted and lowered men, mules, materials, and coal, and two ventilated the mine. Mining operated here Monday through Saturday, 24 hours a day, while steam engines pumped water from the mine continuously every day.
