Lee Chapel was a Methodist Episcopal church built in 1871 and named in honor of General Robert E. Lee. It replaced Mount Carmel Church, which had stood at Ox Road and present day Lee Chapel Road before being destroyed by fire. Many Sundays there were spent in worship and fellowship by some of the oldest and most respected families of Fairfax County. Around 1928, circumstances including impassable roads made it necessary to close the church, but it became active again in 1939 as new families moved into the area and former members wanted to reopen it. Twelve years later, because of the proposal to build the Burke National Airport, later Dulles, in the area, the church closed for the final time in October 1951. Afterward, vandalism plagued the vacant building, and it was finally destroyed by controlled burning. Lee Chapel Cemetery is cared for by Sydenstricker United Methodist Church, which holds its annual Easter Sunrise Service there.
