Built in 1900 in Chicago’s West Pullman neighborhood, the S. A. Foster House and Stable was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright as a summer home for attorney Stephen A. Foster, whose real estate ties helped shape the area. The residence and stable belong to an experimental stage of Wright’s early career and are distinguished by rare Japanese-influenced features, including flared roof peaks and dormers. Their most unusual element is the tumblehome exterior, with walls sloping inward so doors and windows are wider at the bottom while interior walls stay straight. The property later gained Chicago Landmark status for its architectural originality and South Side significance.
