Lorain West Breakwater Light stands on Lake Erie at Lorain, Ohio, marking the harbor for the city’s Black River port. Built in 1917 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, it was the fourth lighthouse to serve this port, continuing a line that began in 1836. A temporary light went into service in 1917 and the main fourth-order Fresnel lens followed in 1918. The lighthouse was replaced in 1965 by an automated light tower and nearly demolished, but local preservation efforts saved it. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, it remains a prominent survivor of Lorain’s harbor history.
