Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park preserves the Cross Creek homestead where Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings lived, wrote, and drew inspiration from central Florida’s landscape and people. On the eastern shore of Orange Lake, the property began as an orange grove with an old Florida farmhouse, including a 19th-century dogtrot house that Rawlings and her husband Charles bought in 1929 and adapted as their home. Now recognized on the National Register of Historic Places and as a National Historic Landmark, the site reflects both her literary importance and the rural setting that shaped her work. After her death in 1953, the property passed to a University of Florida foundation, and the house opened to the public in 1970.
