San Lazaro, in the Galisteo River basin south of Santa Fe, preserves one of the largest pueblo communities in the valley, with extensive room blocks, kilns, a water diversion canal, and a hilltop shrine that reflect residential, productive, and ceremonial life among Tanoan peoples. Occupied during early Spanish entry into the region and into the founding of Santa Fe de Nuevo México, it later became involved in resistance to Spanish rule, including the 1680 Pueblo Revolt and the occupation of Santa Fe. After the Spanish reconquest, heavy losses, expulsion, and forced resettlement ended the community, making the site important to the history of Pueblo resistance, displacement, and migration.
