New Jersey’s capitol in Trenton has served continuously since 1792, making it the third-oldest state house still in legislative use in the United States. Built after the legislature moved from Perth Amboy, it began as a stuccoed structure designed by Jonathan Doane and expanded over the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries through additions, reconstruction after an 1885 fire, and later renovations. Its present form reflects layered architectural changes rather than a single design. Unlike many capitols, it is tightly woven into the city instead of set apart in a grand park. It has also housed state government continuously and briefly served as the United States Department of State in 1799.
