At Kingsboro, three miles south, Georgia’s first narrow gauge railroad, the North and South Railroad, chartered in 1870 to run from Columbus to Rome, ended in 1873. Cataula, meaning Big Rock, bears a Creek name. Clowers Methodist Church, organized as Providence in 1829, was first built of logs by Thomas Clowers and others, with James Dorrough, Jr., as pastor; after being renamed, it was moved to Cataula. Rehobeth Baptist Church, moved to Cataula in 1900, had been organized one and one-quarter miles south in 1839 on land given by the Granberry family, and Rev. Geo. Granberry was its first pastor. Harmony Primitive Baptist Church was organized in 1841 on land given by Thomas McElroy, and in 1953 the land was returned to his family.
