Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument preserves the ground near Crow Agency, Montana, where the Battle of the Little Bighorn was fought on June 25 and 26, 1876, between George Armstrong Custer’s 7th Cavalry and a combined Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho force. First protected in 1879 as a U.S. National Cemetery, the site evolved through renamings, expansion, and transfer to the National Park Service before receiving its current name in 1991. Memorials, markers, and archaeology have reshaped how the battle is remembered, and the monument remains both a battlefield and a contested place of remembrance whose interpretation continues to change.
