Field City, also known as Tubb Town, was founded in the spring of 1889 by Deloss Tubbs, a businessman from Custer, Dakota Territory, around his store on the east bank of Salt Creek. Tubbs and saloon keeper F. R. Curran expected economic advantages from placing the townsite along the anticipated route of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad, which was seeking to continue northwest from Alliance, Nebraska and connect with the Northern Pacific at Billings, Montana after suitable locomotive coal was found at Cambria, nine miles northwest of Tubb Town. Within a few months the town had a milk ranch, newspaper, and Chinese laundry, but its saloons, dance halls, and sporting houses also gave it a “hell raising” notoriety, and its first reported ordinance declared that “no one shall pass through without paying sufficient toll to set ’em up to the bunch.” The railroad connection on which Tubb Town depended never came when land price disagreements caused the route to be shifted two miles west, and when the railway reached the new community of Newcastle in November 1889, Tubb Town residents moved their businesses and belongings there en masse. Field City thus died in the year of its birth, leaving only memories and occasional symptoms of “Tubb Town hangover” to perplex Newcastle citizens.
