Fort Columbia State Park preserves a former coastal defense post on Chinook Point at the mouth of the Columbia River in Chinook, Washington. Built between 1896 and 1904, Fort Columbia formed part of a planned “triangle of fire” with Fort Canby and Fort Stevens to guard the river entrance. After World War II, the fort was declared surplus and passed to the state of Washington in 1950. The park retains twelve historic wood-frame buildings, three artillery batteries, and two coastal artillery guns, while Battery 246 later served Civil Defense purposes. Today the site combines military history, exhibits, preserved quarters, trails, picnic areas, and historic rental houses.
