The Albia State Bank Building was built before 1886, though its façade dates from the early 1900s after the Albia State Bank installed a new front in 1903 when fire had ruined much of the building. That façade reflected the influence of the new stone courthouse built in 1902 on commercial buildings in the district. Before the bank moved here from the south side of the Square in the late 1890s, where it had opened six years earlier, the building housed first a millinery and then a clothing store. The bank later left after consolidating with the Farmers and Miners Savings Bank to form the First Iowa State Bank in 1930. Afterward, the building served a variety of purposes, including for many years as the office of longtime family physician Dr. Bay, while a barber shop remained in the basement continuously from the building’s completion in the 1880s.
