Columbus, Ohio, is home to the United States’ national museum for veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces, a riverfront institution that opened in 2018 on the longtime site of the Franklin County Veterans Memorial. Reimagined from that earlier memorial, it focuses on the experiences of individual veterans rather than organizing exhibits by wars and campaigns. Supported locally for years and backed by John Glenn, it received national museum status from Congress in 2018. Its circular building, memorial grove, and exhibition spaces combine architecture, landscape, and personal artifacts to present military service as a human experience and a place for remembrance, reflection, and public understanding.
