The Hindenburg disaster occurred on 6 May 1937 at Naval Air Station Lakehurst in Manchester Township, New Jersey, when the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire while attempting to dock. Of the 97 people aboard, 35 died, along with one person on the ground. Delayed by headwinds and storms, the airship made a difficult evening approach before igniting near the tail and collapsing within seconds. Extensively photographed and filmed, and fixed in public memory by Herbert Morrison’s radio report, the catastrophe became a defining aviation accident. It shattered confidence in giant rigid passenger airships and effectively ended the airship era.
