Las Cumbres Observatory is a nonprofit organization based in Goleta, California, that operates a global, integrated network of robotic telescopes across professional sites in both hemispheres, allowing some astronomical targets to be tracked continuously as night moves around the Earth. Founded by Wayne Rosing in 1993 and expanded into a global telescope network in 2005, it grew from two 2-meter telescopes into a system of larger and smaller instruments deployed across several continents. Its standardized, software-coordinated network enables rapid-response observations for time-domain astronomy, supports research and education, and contributed to major 2017 discoveries involving gravitational waves and a new type of supernova.
