Majestic Caverns in Childersburg, Alabama, is a large show cave long known for its immense main chamber and abundant onyx-marble formations that are still growing. Known locally in earlier times as Kymulga Cave, it was used by Native Americans, and a Copena burial site discovered there in 1963 held the remains of five people later reburied in 1995. The cave also figures in regional history through Hernando de Soto’s 1540 expedition, Benjamin Hawkins’s 1796 report, and Civil War saltpeter mining. After an unsuccessful onyx venture, a Prohibition-era speakeasy, and mid-20th-century development as a tourist cave, it took the name Majestic Caverns in 2022.
