Founded in 1909 in Swope Park, the Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium grew from a modest 60-acre zoo into a 202-acre, regionally important complex with nearly 1,700 animals and about 8,000 more in its aquarium. Early expansion added exhibits such as the Bear Grotto and Great Ape House, while a major enlargement in 1991 led to themed areas including Australia, Africa, Tiger Trail, KidZone, and The Valley. Major 21st-century additions included the Orangutan Primadome, Polar Bear Passage, Helzberg Penguin Plaza, and the Sobela Ocean Aquarium. Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, it also developed breeding programs and long-range improvements in animal care and visitor facilities.
