Salt Spring, originally called Aguaje de la Brea, is a spring in the Antelope Plain at the southeast end of the Pyramid Hills in Kern County, California. Though small, it was important as a watering place on El Camino Viejo in the San Joaquin Valley, between Alamo Solo Spring and Las Tinajas de Los Indios. Its older name came from the oil that covered the water and made it appear to be only a pool of tar. That deceptive surface sometimes caused thirsty travelers to pass by without realizing that usable water lay beneath it.
