Mount Washington Wilderness is a federally protected area in Oregon’s central Cascade Range, established in 1964 and managed within the Willamette and Deschutes national forests. Centered on Mount Washington, it preserves a striking volcanic landscape of lava plains, broad flows, rubble, Belknap Crater, sparse vegetation, and forests of lodgepole pine, mountain hemlock, ponderosa pine, and Douglas fir. Twenty-eight lakes add variety and support wildlife including deer, elk, small mammals, frogs, and trout. The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail runs through it, while permits and restrictions help protect the area. Its importance rests in its accessible recreation, scenic lakes, and remarkably intact high-Cascades volcanic character.
