Roundtop Hill is a short mountain in western Maryland’s Washington County, southwest of Hancock, whose isolated position distinguishes it from the long ridge systems that dominate the surrounding landscape. Standing near Tonoloway Ridge, it forces the Potomac River into a marked bend along its eastern side, where the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and its old towpath run at the foot of the slope. The hill is also important geologically: exposures along an old railroad grade reveal about 500 feet of the Silurian Wills Creek Formation and underlying Bloomsburg Formation, along with notable examples of folding, cleavage, thrust faulting, and deformation in layered rock.
