Lois Oxnam was already an experienced ranch hand when she began working at Boot Ranch in 1953. At 4 ft. 11 in. and 87 lb, she had no problem wrestling scrub cattle, breaking horses, and handling 2,200 lb Brahman bulls, and Al Boyd often referred to her as fearless. She managed Boot Ranch until 1972, when it was sold, then stayed on under the new owner to manage their horses. A skillful rider, she won several rodeo championships with her favorite horse, Dixie.
