Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village in Mitchell, South Dakota, preserves the remains of a Native village of earth lodges that once stood within a ditch and timber palisade above Firesteel Creek, now near Lake Mitchell. Archaeologists value it as the only reliably dated site of the Lower James River Phase at the time it became a National Historic Landmark in 1964. Excavations have shown a community sustained by several food sources, with farming playing a major role through the cultivation of corn, beans, squash, sunflowers, and tobacco. Despite later landscape changes and damage, the site has continued to yield important evidence of village construction and daily life.
