On the night of Dec. 8, 1864, Maj. Gen. W.T. Sherman's headquarters for the Military Division of the Mississippi, USA, was established at Zion Church. Maj. Gen. O.O. Howard's headquarters for the Right Wing, consisting of the 15th and 17th Corps, was at Eden, 3 miles southwest, and Maj. Gen. H.W. Slocum's headquarters for the Left Wing, consisting of the 14th and 20th Corps, was at Springfield, 12 miles north. On the 9th, Sherman moved forward to Pooler, 9 miles from Savannah, while the Left Wing converged on Monteith, 11 miles east. In the Right Wing, the 17th Corps destroyed the Central RR through Eden while the 15th Corps began passing to the south of Savannah on both banks of the Great Ogeechee River.
