Maryland honored its loyal sons who served in the United States Navy during the War for the Preservation of the Union. Maryland furnished the United States Navy 4162 men who participated in important naval battles of the Civil War, including Port Royal on November 7th, 1861, Monitor & Merrimack on March 9th, 1862, New Orleans from April 18th to 28th, 1862, Vicksburg from May 19th to July 4th, 1863, Mobile on August 5th, 1864, and Fort Fisher from January 13th to 15th, 1865.
