George Washington united the endowments of the hero with the virtues of the patriot, and by exerting both in establishing the liberties of his country, rendered his name dear to his fellow citizens and gave the world an immortal example of true glory. In the year of Christ 1788, and in the twelfth year of the Commonwealth, the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia expressed affection and gratitude toward him.
