Hospital Point Range Rear Light in Beverly, Massachusetts, is an active lighthouse that serves as the rear marker of a pair of range lights guiding vessels through Salem Sound. Rather than standing as a separate tower, it is mounted in the steeple of the First Baptist Church of Beverly, using the town’s tallest spire as a navigational aid. First established as a single beacon, the system was changed in 1927 when a lightship beacon was placed in the church steeple and the older Hospital Point light became the front light. Its very narrow beam provides precise alignment, and it remains in active service despite a 1975 church fire.
