Santa Barbara Light, established on December 1, 1856, was an early West Coast lighthouse at Santa Barbara Harbor, built with its tower rising through the keeper’s dwelling. It became especially significant through Julia Frances Curry Williams, who was formally appointed keeper in 1865 and served for more than 40 years, raising her family there and leaving only twice. Her long tenure ended in 1905 after a fall. The original structure was destroyed in the severe earthquake of June 29, 1925, while keeper Harley Alonzo Weeks rescued family members from the collapse. A temporary tower followed, and the site remains part of Santa Barbara’s maritime landscape.
