USS Hawkbill (SSN-666) was a Sturgeon-variant Sturgeon-class submarine built at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. Its keel was laid on 12 September 1966, it was launched on 2 April 1969, and it was commissioned on 4 February 1971, with Mrs. Bernard F. Roeder as sponsor at the christening and Commander Christopher H. Brown as its first commanding officer. It was decommissioned on March 15, 2000. The submarine was 302 feet long with a beam of 31.8 feet, displaced 4229 tons on the surface and 4762 tons submerged, made 15 knots on the surface and 25 knots submerged, had unlimited endurance, a test depth of 1200 feet, a complement of 12 officers and 95 enlisted personnel, and was powered by an S5W pressurized water nuclear reactor with 2 steam turbines and a single propeller.
