Brookhaven and Lincoln County produced a wide range of blues and related musicians whose careers carried them across the United States and overseas. Virgil Brawley, Blind Jim Brewer, and Moses “Whispering” Smith spread Brookhaven’s blues tradition widely, with Brawley remaining especially tied to his hometown while becoming a central figure in Jackson’s music scene, Brewer gaining fame for street performances in Chicago, and Smith finding a home in Baton Rouge’s swamp blues world. Brookhaven was also home to singers and musicians in Southern soul, gospel, and other related styles, including Robert “Duke” Tillman, Walt Gezzy, Mr. Redboy, and Hurricane Mary Johnson. Brawley embodied a broad musical approach that drew on electric and acoustic blues, rock ‘n’ roll, country, and folk, performing first with the Brutes, serving in the U.S. Army, working as a sound technician, settling in Texas, returning to Mississippi in 1996, forming the Juvenators, recording several CDs, producing other artists, and later adding Ozarks music to his repertoire while continuing to return for Brookstock performances. Other Brookhaven-connected musicians included Al “The Perker” Perkins, a singer, bandleader, disc jockey, producer, and manager who had a national R&B hit in 1969 with “Yes, My Goodness, Yes”; Eugene Smiley, whose long career in Kansas City and Chicago included work as a vocalist, guitarist, bandleader, session man, and record producer; Charlie McClelland, who played with James Scott’s Blues Rockers before moving to Chicago; and Memphis Henderson, an early local harmonica player who mentored Smith. Smith moved to Louisiana in 1957, began recording there in 1963, released most of his records on Excello, and toured Europe with the American Blues Legends revue in 1973. In an earlier era, Norfield was a blues hot spot where Little Brother Montgomery and other pianists performed, and H.C. Travillion, who had early Brookhaven connections, played with the Rhythm Aces of Bogalusa, Louisiana.
