George Washington Carver National Monument in southwest Missouri preserves the landscape of Carver’s childhood, including the site of his boyhood home, across 240 acres of rolling hills, woodlands, and prairie. Established on July 14, 1943, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt with $30,000, it marked a first in the National Park System as the first national monument devoted to an African American and the first dedicated to someone other than a U.S. president. Its historic features include the 1881 Moses Carver house and the Carver cemetery, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.
