Tsirege, also written Tshirege, is an Ancestral Puebloan site in northern New Mexico about a mile west of White Rock. Its Tewa name means “bird place.” Occupied from about 1325 to 1600, it developed into a large settlement of roughly 800 rooms. The remains include a long defensive wall, 10 kivas, a reservoir, and many notable petroglyph panels, reflecting both the community’s scale and the ceremonial and practical features that supported it. The people of San Ildefonso Pueblo regard Tsirege as an ancestral place, giving it enduring cultural importance as well as archaeological significance. Public access is very limited.
