Bogota, near Port Republic, Virginia, began as a 244-acre tract bought in 1751 by attorney and politician Gabriel Jones, who built the first house there in 1756 and hosted George Washington in 1784. The present Greek Revival brick mansion was built about 1845–1847 by Jacob Strayer, reusing material from the earlier dwelling and preserving many original interior features. During the Battle of Port Republic on June 9, 1862, the property was shelled and ransacked by Union troops. Its outbuildings, quarters for enslaved people, cemeteries, and archaeological sites reveal plantation life, Civil War history, and even prehistoric Native American occupation.
