In fall 1862, Gen. E. Kirby Smith led a Confederate invasion of Kentucky on a route concurrent with Bragg's invasion to the west. At Richmond, Smith defeated USA forces, then occupied Lexington on Sept. 2. The Battle of Perryville prevented the CSA plan to take central Kentucky. Smith's army then joined Bragg's and moved through here from Oct. 19-24 on its return to Tennessee.
