A free-standing fireplace on the Hawkwood Mansion property remains a mystery. It stands three-quarters of a mile from the mansion, and its purpose, date of construction, and whether it was ever connected to a building are unknown. No living person who has lived on the property remembers anything other than the fireplace standing alone. Although the upper part of the structure suggests that something may once have been attached, archeological digs conducted by the Town of Ballston in 2016 in this area found no evidence of any building.
