In 1540, Hernando De Alarcon led a Spanish expedition by boat up the Colorado River from the Gulf of California to provide supplies for Francisco Coronado's expedition in search of the fabled Seven Cities of Cibola, and in passing this point on September 5, 1540, they became the first non-Indians to sight Alta California.
