Fort Ligonier was built here in 1758 as a base for Forbes expedition. Under Colonel James Burd, it withstood a French and Indian attack on October 22, 1758. The only small fort in the West not taken in Pontiac's War in 1763, it made possible Bouquet's rescue of Fort Pitt.
