New London Harbor Light stands at Lighthouse Point at the entrance to New London Harbor and is among the oldest light stations in the United States. The first lighthouse was built there in 1760, and the present stone tower replaced it in 1801 after Connecticut ceded the site to the federal government. At 90 feet, it is the oldest and tallest lighthouse in Connecticut and on Long Island Sound. Its lighting system was repeatedly modernized, and the station expanded with a keeper’s house built in 1863 and enlarged in 1900. Long served by keepers from the colonial era onward, it remains an important aid to navigation and maritime landmark.
