Construction of Lambert Street School began in 1856, and the building served as a school from 1857 to 1925. Its upper floor housed the high school, reached through the front right door and a stairway to the second floor, while the lower floor was an open room with three sliding doors that could divide it into two rooms. A coal stove heated the lower floor, coal was delivered to a shed on the right side of the building, coat racks lined the street side of the first-floor rooms, and two outhouses, one for boys and one for girls, stood at the back corners of the property. After 1912, high school students from Alloway attended Woodstown or Salem High School. The schoolhouse bell, once in a belfry no longer on the building, and plaques presented by some senior graduating classes are displayed in the Alloway History Museum. A June 7, 1856, bid for the new brick schoolhouse in Allowaystown proposed a two-story brick building with nine-foot stories, specified materials and construction details, and offered to complete the work by the middle of October for twelve hundred and ninety-nine dollars and fifty cents, signed by William House and Richard G. Hadley. When a new school was built on Greenwich Street in 1925, Ernest Dorrell purchased the building, operated a lampshade business on the first floor, and lived on the second floor. After marrying Olive Evans in 1927, he adapted a rabbit hutch moved from another property into a workshop, and as their family grew and eventually included eight boys born from 1927 to 1949, the family expanded into the lower floor. Ernest, who had studied at the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art before World War I, later decorated furniture, became an antique dealer, and gained recognition for making and painting lampshades in partnership with Martin Bach of Durand Glass, who made the lamp bases. The building remains in the Dorrell family, and both Ernest and Olive had attended school there.
