Seneca Rocks, a towering quartzite crag in eastern West Virginia, rises nearly 900 feet above Seneca Creek and has become one of the state’s most recognizable natural landmarks. Formed from ancient sand deposits later uplifted, folded, and eroded into a sharp ridge, it has long shaped human activity in the region. Native Americans lived nearby and traveled the old Seneca Trail through the Potomac corridor before European surveyors and settlers arrived in the 18th century. Since documented climbing began in 1935, it has gained national importance in American climbing, including wartime training by the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division, and it remains a major recreation and scenic destination.
