The Lightner Museum in downtown St. Augustine occupies the former Hotel Alcazar, an 1887 Spanish Renaissance Revival resort built by Henry Flagler for affluent winter visitors arriving by his Florida East Coast Railway. Designed by Carrère and Hastings, the notable poured-concrete building offered luxurious amenities before closing as a hotel in 1932. Otto C. Lightner bought it in 1947 and opened a museum there in 1948, later turning it over to the city. Today its former hotel spaces hold American Gilded Age collections, Victorian art, musical instruments, decorative arts, and paintings and sculpture, while the building itself remains a major part of its significance.
